The base warms your waterer through its bottom plate, and a built-in thermostat decides when that is needed.

The cold arrives — the element switches on

At around 35°F the thermostat powers the element, which is routed across the full plate so the base warms evenly rather than in one hot spot.

Once it is warm enough the thermostat cuts the power again, so the base is not heating all winter long.

Find a level spot

Choose flat, level ground in the coop, out of direct rain and splash, and keep the cord clear of the birds.

Set your waterer on top

Sit your metal fount or plastic bucket waterer centrally on the base so it sits flat and stable.

Plug it in

Plug the 10ft cord into a grounded outlet suited to outdoor use. Green means power, red means the element is heating.

Which size do I need?

Match the base to the footprint of your waterer. The 11 in base suits smaller founts and buckets; the 13 in base gives you more room for larger metal founts and 5-gallon bucket waterers. Measure the bottom of your waterer and pick the base it sits on comfortably.

How much electricity does it use?

The 13 in base (HB-13) is rated 125W at 120V. Because the thermostat only brings the element on when the temperature drops, it is not drawing that all winter — just when your flock would otherwise be drinking ice.

At what temperature does it switch on?

The built-in thermostat brings the element on at around 35°F and switches it off again once the base is warm enough. There is nothing to set.

Does it work with metal and plastic waterers?

Yes — metal double-wall founts and plastic bucket waterers both sit straight on top. Set the waterer centrally so it is flat and stable, and leave the LEDs visible.

What do the two lights mean?

Green means the base has power. Red means the element is currently heating. Both off means it is not getting power — check the outlet and the plug.

Is the cord long enough for my coop?

The cord is 10ft, which reaches most coop outlets without help. If you do need an extension lead, use a grounded, heavy-duty one and keep the connection dry and off the ground.

Is there a warranty?

Yes. The heated base is covered by a 1-year warranty. If it develops a fault in that first year, message us and we will put it right. Separately, if you change your mind you can return it within 30 days.
